When the weekend rolls around, the usual spots feel stale. Hidden bars offer a fresh vibe, a secret entrance, and a story to tell. I’ve spent over a dozen evenings slipping into places that locals keep to themselves, and each one delivers a unique experience. If you’re looking to swap the crowded cocktail lounges for something with character, read on.
1. The Speakeasy Under the Old Library
Located three blocks from the city center, the entrance is a plain wooden door behind a stack of dusty books. Inside, a low ceiling and dim Edison bulbs set a nostalgic tone. The bar menu is surprisingly modern: a gin‑based “Dusty Book” cocktail costs £12, and the house‑made bitters are brewed on site. The staff knows the names of the regulars, so a quick nod can earn you a free tasting of the next drink. The only downside? The space is tight; if you arrive during a weekday evening, you’ll have to wait up to 20 minutes for a seat.
2. The Rooftop Hideout on Mill Lane
From the top of an abandoned warehouse, this rooftop bar offers panoramic city views and a rotating selection of craft beers. The entrance is a steel door that opens with a hidden keypad; you’ll need the QR code posted on the building’s graffiti wall. The highlight is the “Midnight Hops” IPA, a 6% ABV brew that costs £8.50. The bar is open until 2 am, and the staff runs a happy hour every Friday from 8 pm to 10 pm. The caveat: the bar is only accessible by elevator, which sometimes stalls, causing a 5‑minute delay for guests.
3. The Underground Speakeasy in the Old Mill
Hidden behind a false wall in a disused mill, this speakeasy feels like a step back in time. The décor is a mix of reclaimed wood and brass fixtures. The menu focuses on classic cocktails with a twist: the “Millennial Mule” is a Moscow mule with a splash of elderflower, priced at £11. The bar hosts live jazz on Thursday nights, drawing a crowd of around 30 people. The only limitation is that the bar closes at 11 pm on weekends, so plan your night accordingly.
